WORKSHOPS, LECTURES & DEMONSTRATIONS

Many of our members conduct classes ranging from beginning through advanced levels. These classes cover many techniques including casting, fabrication, hydraulic press, chain making, granulation, and others. For details, check the various chapters' pages. If you have news of such events that you'd like published on those pages, please have your chapter's events chairman submit articles to the webmaster.

FLORIDA SOCIETY OF GOLDSMITHS

MODERN MASTERS WORKSHOP

WILDACRES, NORTH CAROLINA

OCTOBER 26 beginning with dinner NOVEMBER 1, 2009 ending with breakfast

Classes on Oct. 27 Oct. 31st, 2009. All workshops are 5 day class. The workshop fee is $900. This fee covers: Tuition for 5 days of classes; Lodging for 6 nights; 17 Meals; Gratuities; as well as membership in FSG. Michael Boyd Integrating Stone and Metal 

Material, Tool, & Lab fee $100 * some tools are optional if you already own them.

Prerequisite: Fabrication and basic stone setting skills. Learn how to design with stone. Class will cover basic lapidary techniques to better integrate stones into your metal work. This will involve cutting and polishing stones along with how to drill holes in stones, carve grooves and channels, glues, and laminations. We will also explore various metal fabrications you will need to set the stones you have cut. Patsy Croft- Pliqu a Jour Enameling with a New Methodology

Material & Lab fee $35

You will have the opportunity to change the way artists think of Pliqu a Jour. This advanced enameling technique is made easier through a new methodology. With new and old materials we can simplify the technique and also allow you to create an enamel jewel in any shape. This will not only add to your design opportunities but also lower your cost. You will explore the advantages and disadvantages of Klyre Fire, Foils, Wet Felt and the new possibilities in designs they can bring you. We will also cover stone setting stone prior to enameling. Arline Fisch: Textile Techniques in Metal

Materials Kit $50 *based on copper cost.

This is a 5 day intensive workshop covering a broad range of textile techniques which can be used with metal, including weaving, braiding, knitting, crochet and basketry. Slides and demonstrations will be followed by making small samples in thin sheet metal and small gauge wire as an introduction to various processes in creating these structures. Each sample will be a complete unit with edges and surfaces finished in a manner appropriate to the specific technique. Materials used will include copper, brass, aluminum, and silver if you wish to bring your own. No prior fiber experience is required. Harold OConnor: Surface Embellishment

Material & Lab fee $70 * based on metal costs

Surface Embellishments Workshop: Introduction to creasing and folding to create hollow forms with little soldering; Reticulation of silver; Lamination of copper and gold to silver to create bi-metals; Introduction to silver and gold granulation, and roller embossing to create subtle metal textures.    <OConnor student list> Website: www.haroldoconnor.com

 

Deb Stoner: Making a Spectacle (Eyeglasses)

Material & Lab fee $55

Historically, jewelers were partners with opticians in the design and making of eyeglasses. In this workshop, well explore historical through contemporary spectacles through slides, samples, demos and hands-on work. Well learn how jeweler's techniques are applicable to making eyeglasses. Learn tricks from the optical industry about holding lenses in frames, coloring lenses, making screws and rivets, and explore inventive approaches to creating hinges and other mechanisms. <Stoner student list> Website: www.debstoner.com

The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) recently published Professional Guidelines, available as downloadable PDF files through its website. These Guidelines offer practical advice, checklists, and real-life guidance on recurring issues within the art and craft community in all media. Developed by an esteemed Committee representing all aspects of the crafts field and chaired by Harriete Estel Berman, the Guidelines promote understanding and practical standards. (more)

WHO WE ARE

FSG.. a 501(c) 3 non profit organization created by metalsmiths to aid and support other metalsmiths through meetings, publicity, workshops, and exhibitions. Contributions are tax deductible to the limits the law will allow.
FSG.. members are primarily active metalsmiths. There are no geographic restrictions or limits to kinds of metals employed. Members' work runs the gamut from platinum and gold to iron and tin.
FSG.. has five chapters in the state of Florida and a large membership outside the state.

OBJECTIVES

FSG.. desires to broaden public awareness and appreciation of fine quality handcrafted metal pieces.
FSG.. publishes a newsletter four times annually to inform the members about activities and pertinent metals information.
FSG.. was formed in 1984 to provide metalsmiths with opportunities for education and information exchange about materials sources and sales outlets.
FSG.. presents workshops under the guidance of qualified metalsmiths.

The Anita London Memorial Display

The Anita London Memorial Display cabinet in the gallery of the St. Petersburg Arts Center will accept your finest works for display. You must be a member of FSG to participate in the display. The pieces do not have to be for sale. If a piece is for sale, the Arts Center takes a 45% commission from the sale price, unless you are a member of the Arts Center, in which case it is a lower commission of 35%.

The dates are as follows:
Display dates: Jan 18 - April 17
Display dates: April 17 - June 6
Display dates: June 6 - Aug. 26
Display dates: Aug. 26 - Sept. 30
Display dates: Sept 30 - Dec. 31st.

Artwork needs to arrive one week prior to display date.
Feel free to get a group together to mail in your pieces. I will need a single address to return the work submitted by a group. Individual contracts are needed however.

The Arts Center has recently asked that we limit the price of individual pieces to $500 or less per piece for insurance purposes. Please print and fill out this contract and send it with your artwork. Please be sure to indicate if a piece is for sale or display only! A countersigned copy will be returned to you.
